CHAPTER FOUR

Tamsin didn't respond.

Her lack of response angered Luth. She could tell by the silent thunder riding his expression, the stiffness in his shoulders and the way he ignored her once they entered the cabin. Terah and Walker lounged on the couch, a bowl of popcorn between them, the wine bottle long empty. Tamsin's twin glanced at her with glittering eyes, a flush in her cheek. Tamsin avoided her gaze, walking down the hall to her bedroom and closing the door behind her. The phantom imprint of Luth's hands swept over her body, echoing the soreness between her legs. As she stepped into the shower, it hit her- no protection, no birth control.

A rapid count of the days- suspect, since she'd never really had any reason to keep good track- had her nervous. She'd have to sit down at her laptop in the morning and find a calculator on the internet to figure out the chance she was pregnant. Bear seed tended to be a bit more potent than most- one of the reasons she surmised was behind their biological urge to mate for life. Couplings resulted in babies a hell of a lot faster than between two humans.

She sent a quick prayer to whatever deity was listening that she wasn't pregnant. Even as a warm glow suffused her, the vision of a tiny baby with Luth's eyes cradled in her arms. She quashed the yearning, as she had so many times in the past. It wasn't just about what she wanted. Other people were involved.

How would the family change if she and Luth mated? How would they deal with that? It could split the family apart. Even though Luth didn’t seem to think it was a big deal, Tamsin knew some of the siblings- definitely Livia- would regard their union with disgust. The family had already been through the trauma of a dual divorce when their parents met and mated while both still married to other people. It had taken years for the children to come together into a cohesive whole, and sometimes even now the pieces didn’t entirely fit. She and Luth couldn’t jeopardize what they had all finally managed to achieve with the maturity of adulthood- family harmony.

On the other hand, if they were truly mates the urge to mark her would grow every day until Luth wouldn’t be able to help himself. They’d all seen their parents try to fight the biological and magical connection. Try to fight, and fail. And then grow to love each other despite the mating bond. Tamsin knew the futility of trying to avoid what nature dictated. Now that they'd slept together...

She swallowed, leaning her head against the tiled shower wall as the water fell over her. What a mess. What a godforsaken mess.
